Plan your home theater in one minute

Enter your room size and where you sit. CinemaGrid recommends the speaker layout, the TV or screen size for an immersive view, where every speaker goes, how many subwoofers you need and which AV receiver to buy.

How the home theater planner works

A good home theater balances three things: a screen big enough to fill your field of view, speakers placed at the angles the movie mix expects, and enough bass for the room volume. CinemaGrid uses the published guidelines from Dolby, THX and SMPTE so you can plan before buying – and avoid the most common mistakes, such as a TV that is too small for the seating distance or rear speakers squeezed against the seats.

    Choosing the speaker layout

The name of a layout lists the speakers at ear level, the subwoofers and the overhead speakers. A 5.1.2 system has five ear-level speakers, one subwoofer and two height speakers; 7.1.4 adds rear surrounds and four ceiling speakers. As a rule of thumb, small rooms under 150 sq ft work best with a clean 5.1 or 5.1.2 setup, medium rooms suit 5.1.4 or 7.1.4, and large dedicated theaters can use 7.2.4 or 9.2.4. More speakers only help if you can place them at the correct angles.

    SpeakerRecommended position
Front left / right22 – 30° either side of the center line, tweeters near ear height
CenterDirectly above or below the screen, angled toward the listeners
Side surrounds90 – 110° from the screen, about 1 – 2 ft above ear level
Rear surrounds135 – 150°, spaced about as far apart as the front pair
Top front / top rearOn the ceiling, about 45° up from the seat, in line with the front speakers
Top middle (.2 layouts)On the ceiling, directly above or slightly in front of the seat

    What size TV or screen?

Screen size is a question of viewing angle. SMPTE recommends that the screen fill at least 30° of your horizontal field of view; THX recommends about 40° for an immersive cinema feel. With 4K content you can sit closer without seeing pixels, so many enthusiasts now aim for 36 – 40°. For a seating distance of 10 ft (3 m), that means roughly a 75 – 85 inch TV. Above 100 inches, a projector with a screen is usually much cheaper than a television.

    Subwoofers and room size

Bass is where rooms cause the most trouble. Low frequencies build up in corners and cancel at certain seats, especially in the middle of the room. Two subwoofers – for example at the front wall's midpoints or in opposite corners – smooth out the response across several seats. Rooms larger than about 3,000 cubic feet usually benefit from two subs. Use room correction (Audyssey, Dirac, YPAO) after placement.

    Choosing an AV receiver

    Seating position

Avoid placing the main seat exactly in the middle of the room or against the back wall – both are bass trouble spots. About 38 % of the room length from the front or back wall is a reliable starting point. Keep the listeners' ears roughly level with the front tweeters and leave at least 2 ft between the seats and the surround speakers.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best speaker setup for a small room?

For rooms under about 150 sq ft a well-placed 5.1 or 5.1.2 system usually sounds better than squeezing in 7.1.4, because each speaker can be put at the correct angle.

What size TV should I get for 10 feet?

    For 30 – 40° of viewing angle, about 70 – 85 inches. A 75 or 85 inch 4K TV suits most people sitting 9 – 11 ft away.

How high should Dolby Atmos ceiling speakers be?

Place them on the ceiling roughly 45° up from your seat – slightly in front of and behind you for top front and top rear speakers.

    Do I need two subwoofers?

Not always, but two subwoofers give more even bass across several seats and are recommended in rooms over about 3,000 cubic feet.

How many channels does my receiver need for 7.1.4?

Eleven channels: seven ear-level speakers and four height speakers. Subwoofers have their own amplifiers and don't count.

    About CinemaGrid

CinemaGrid is an independent, free planner for home theaters and media rooms. It applies Dolby, THX and SMPTE placement and viewing-angle guidelines. We are not affiliated with any speaker, TV or receiver brand.

Every formula on this page runs entirely in your web browser. The numbers you type are never uploaded, stored or shared. Our goal is simple: give you an honest starting point so you can compare product specifications with confidence and avoid paying for capacity you do not need – or buying something too small to do the job.

The methodology combines widely published engineering rules of thumb, manufacturer data sheets and the electrical code practices that installers use every day. We review the assumptions regularly and update the calculator when typical product specifications change.
